Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 1 Timothy 6:10 — “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”
That verse would sound a lot more comfortable if it actually read “money is the root of all evil,” or “the lack of money is the root of all evil.” But that’s not what it says. The problem was never having money — it’s the attitude toward it. G. Campbell Morgan zeroed in on the word avarice: a love of money that hoards and holds, dries up compassion in the soul, and lowers the whole standard of morality. It shows up just as easily in someone with nothing as in someone with everything. The good news is this: regardless of your net worth, God wants you rich — rich in the assets that time can’t tarnish and inflation can’t touch. You can possess vast earthly treasure and still live like a pauper by the one standard that counts for eternity. Loving God and loving gold are not the same pursuit, and you can’t afford to confuse them.
