Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 1 Timothy 6:12 — “Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.”
The Christian life was never meant to be lived from the comfort of an overstuffed armchair. Charles Spurgeon drew a lesson from military history to make the point: when Spartan soldiers marched into battle, they went singing, willing and eager. The Persians had to be driven into the fight by the crack of their officers’ whips. It’s no wonder a handful of Spartans could stand against thousands of Persians — they were like lions in the midst of sheep. Spurgeon’s challenge to the church was simple: she should never need to be forced into reluctant action. Full of irrepressible life, she should long for the fight against everything contrary to God. That’s the same call sounded in the old hymn “Onward, Christian Soldiers” — marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before.
