Episode 17: The Grace of Law | 1 Timothy 1:8 — Coach C’s Neighborhood

It’s a beautiful day to be a neighbor. Today we move into a new book — 1 Timothy.

Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 1 Timothy 1:8 — “We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.”

Here’s a fair question: Scripture says believers are released from the law and under grace — so why does it also call the law good, even a source of freedom? R.L. Dabney untangles the apparent contradiction by showing that “law” carries several meanings in Scripture. It’s the unchanging declaration of God’s own character. It was our guardian until Christ came, showing us our sin so we’d turn to the Redeemer. For the believer already redeemed, it’s the holy rule of conduct that guides sanctification. And even in a fallen world, it restrains sin and lays the foundation for a just society. James called it a mirror, showing us where we’re clean and where we’re not. Grace doesn’t cancel the law. Grace is what lets us finally see it rightly.

A godly husband isn’t made in a day. Neither is a godly wife, a godly father, or a godly mother. They’re made in moments like this — one verse, one choice, one day at a time.
