Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 1 Timothy 1:17 — “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.”
“Due to circumstances beyond our control” are usually words that bring frustration. But Paul owed his very salvation to circumstances entirely beyond his control — intercepted by Christ on the road to Damascus, his plans overturned, the worst of sinners shown mercy. Patrick Fairbairn points out what that mercy produced: not a passing feeling of relief, but a doxology. Paul’s mind moves from his own story straight to the greatness of the God who authored it — the sovereign King of the Ages, who directs the affairs of this world according to His own will. Walter Chalmers Smith put the same wonder into verse in his hymn “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” — the God who gives life to great and small alike, unchanging while we wither like leaves on a tree.
