Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 2 Thessalonians 3:11-12 — Paul’s command to those living idle among the Thessalonians to settle down and earn the food they eat.
“Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die” was the wrong idea in Isaiah’s day. “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow the Lord returns” was just as wrong in Paul’s. His actual instruction was simpler: the one unwilling to work shall not eat. Martin Luther pressed the point further — God could make food grow on the table without our lifting a finger, but He won’t, because He wants us to work and use our reason. God has promised to meet every need according to the riches of His glory in Christ. He never promised to deliver the meal to your door. Whatever you do, do it for His glory — and the best place to be found when Christ returns is somewhere hard at work.
