A farmer can plow, fertilize, and water all season long — but if he never planted a seed, harvest comes, and there’s nothing to show for it. No amount of cultivation makes up for a lack of life. Charles Spurgeon made the same point about holiness: it can’t be manufactured by sheer effort or willpower. It has to grow out of faith in Christ, the way a flower grows out of a bulb planted in soil. Faith is the bulb. Holiness is the fragrant flower that comes of it, planted in the soil of a renewed heart. Trying to cultivate a godly walk without first receiving the Word that can save you is exactly backwards — plant the seed first, and the growth will follow.
