Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 1 Thessalonians 2:7,11 — Paul describing his care for the church “like a nursing mother” and “as a father deals with his own children.”
It’s no accident Paul reaches for parenting to describe pastoring. In both, the key is love. Albert Barnes put it plainly: nothing is ever gained by a sour, harsh, dissatisfied manner. Sinners are never scolded into either duty or heaven. What is true and right, we should maintain and defend — but we’ll always do it more effectively if we do it kindly. Barnes summed it up in four words: hate the sin, love the sinner. C.S. Lewis admitted he once thought that was a silly distinction, until he realized it was exactly how he’d treated himself his whole life. Take that same grace you show yourself, and try it on someone else.
