It’s a beautiful day to be a neighbor.

Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 1 Peter 3:3-4 — “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

God could have created a very functional, very bland, black-and-white world. Instead, He made a universe abounding in luxuriant variety, rich color, and amazing textures. He created a world for all His creatures to enjoy. The adorning of creation provides a lesson on which Peter draws in chapter 3, and which the poet Anne Bradstreet underscores in her verse. If so much excellence abides here below, how excellent must be the One who dwells on high, whose power and beauty we know by His works. She marvels at the Creator who so richly decked the world, then reflects on time, the great leveler. Kings, their monuments, their wit, their gold, and their buildings all fade into the dust. But the one whose name is graved in the white stone will last and shine when all of these are gone. Outward adornment is nice, but not necessary. By contrast, inward adornment is more than a good idea. It is a command. God has called His bride to develop a beautiful inner life: a life adorned with the fruit of His Spirit, a life colored by the character of Christ. As Peter suggests, a meek and quiet spirit is a good place to start. Looking your best for God.

A godly husband isn’t made in a day. Neither is a godly wife, a godly father, or a godly mother. They’re made in moments like this one — one verse, one choice, one day at a time.
