It’s a beautiful day to be a neighbor.

Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on Hebrews 12:4 — “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.”

You’re in a strange city, far from home, friends, and family, and suddenly you’re tempted to do something wrong. Is your first thought, “What would others think?” Or is it, “What would God think?” God’s opinion is the one that really matters, and it’s never right to do wrong. But have you ever considered why you do what you do when you face temptation? It may not be for the best of reasons, as Abraham Kuyper makes painfully clear. Not every resistance against sin can be called a struggle against sin. Everything hinges on what moves you to oppose it. One person avoids a sin out of concern for his health. Another guards against it because it would injure his good name. A third resists because yielding would ruin him financially. A fourth opposes it because his narrow circle sharply condemns it. And with not a few, there is no conscious motive at all, only a moral instinct, the judgment of public opinion, or an impulse to be decent. A certain sin may decrease, but far more because it is now seen as coarse and impolite than from fear of a holy God. Fear of people may keep you from certain sins. But fear of God will make you wary of all sin. The fear of God is more than an emotion. It is an attitude of life that seeks to please Him in every action, public and private. That is only fitting when you consider your calling: “Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16).

A godly husband isn’t made in a day. Neither is a godly wife, a godly father, or a godly mother. They’re made in moments like this one — one verse, one choice, one day at a time.
