It’s a beautiful day to be a neighbor.
Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on Hebrews 7:1 — “This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High.”
Scripture tells us Melchizedek had no father or mother, no genealogy, no beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God (Hebrews 7:3). And like Melchizedek, Christ is King of righteousness and King of peace (Hebrews 7:2). But what does that mean for you? Alexander Maclaren gets to the heart of it. The moment a person puts his trembling trust in Jesus Christ as Savior, he receives more than pardon and the steady flow of God’s love in spite of his sin. He receives a new life, created after God in righteousness and true holiness. Don’t suppose the Gospel is merely forgiveness, or that its gift is only that you’re acquitted because Christ died. All that is true. But there is something more. By faith, you are so knit to Christ that a life created after His life passes into you by His gift. He is first of all King of Righteousness. Let what comes first in all His gifts come first in all your efforts. Don’t seek comfort so much as grace to know your duty, and strength to put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12). Because Jesus is righteous, you are forgiven, and God sees you as righteous. Because Jesus is righteous, you can live a righteous life through the power of His life in you. Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the spoil as a sign of his submission to one greater than himself. Is it too much to ask that you, made righteous by the King of Righteousness, give Him your life in return?
