It’s a beautiful day to be a neighbor.
Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on Hebrews 5:12 — “You need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again.”
After a certain age, we expect people to have mastered the basics of life. But the Hebrews never got past the kindergarten stage of the Christian life. Instead of becoming teachers, they were still toddlers in the faith, and their growth in grace was long overdue. That’s not unique to the first century. Albert Barnes points out that people can be true Christians and still be ignorant of the elementary principles of the faith. The causes are familiar: little early instruction, preachers who fail to teach their people, a lack of real interest in the things of God, and a greater interest in everything else. It is surprising how vague and unsettled many Christians are on the most important points, and how little prepared they are to defend what they believe. Deadness to the world, self-denial, prayer, doing good, forgiveness, charity, and love for a dying world are rudiments that children in righteousness should know. Someone once said, “My favorite grade in school was the second grade, because three of the happiest years of my life were spent there.” The problem is a lack of visible, reasonable progress in the basics. Maturity is the byproduct of putting what you know to good use. Do that, and you will make progress in the school of faith. The basics are the best place to start, and the worst place to stop.
