Today’s Family Wins devotional opens in 2 Timothy 4:9-10, where Paul writes: “Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me.”
Every sport falls into one of two categories — individual or team. And nothing wastes a team roster spot like a player who never stops thinking like a solo act. Paul understood this about the Christian life. He accomplished more than almost anyone in history, yet he rarely traveled alone, and he never stopped talking about our “one another” obligations to each other. He planted churches for exactly this reason — so believers would have encouragement and fellowship close at hand. As William Biederwolf said it best: a man can’t be a good Christian without godly friends, and one true Christian friend is worth more than anything else the world has to give. That’s what makes Demas’s story so sobering. When he loved the world more than the race, the first casualty wasn’t his faith — it was his friendship with Paul. Carry each other’s burdens. Be kind and forgiving to one another. Love one another. You were never meant to walk this alone — you have the Lord, and you have a whole family of brothers and sisters in Christ standing beside you.
