Today’s Family Wins devotional reflects on 2 Timothy 3:1-2 — “There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money.”
Lover of God, or lover of gold? Only one letter separates the two words, but the outlooks they describe are worlds apart — and the love of one will always overpower the love of the other. Jesus put it plainly: no one can serve two masters. John Wesley, who reportedly died leaving behind nothing but his Bible, his horse, and the Methodist Church, echoed Paul’s warning about the deceitfulness of riches. Open your eyes, Wesley said, and you’ll see the melancholy proof daily — those resolved to be rich have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Riches themselves aren’t always ruinous. The desire for them is. Whether or not someone who chases wealth actually gains it, Wesley warned, they invariably lose their own soul in the pursuit. God’s Word, on the other hand, is a gold mine for the one who loves God.
