Charles Spurgeon traced the secret back to union with the risen Lord — a consolation so abiding that believers facing sickness, even death itself, have been found as much at peace as they’d ever been in full health. Francis of Assisi put the same truth into a prayer that’s outlasted eight centuries: Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. It is in giving that we receive, and in dying that we are born to eternal life.
