Dear Neighbor,
In a recent conversation with a fellow believer during a conversation at work, a profound realization emerged that I feel called to share. They – a successful business leader and father of three – confessed that amidst the beautiful chaos of family life, he had lost sight of his deeper purpose. He was wrestling with the delicate balance we all face: the divine dance between who we are called to be and what we are called to do.
This conversation stirred my heart to clarify something essential for all of us juggling the sacred responsibilities of marriage, parenting, and professional life. There’s a crucial distinction between our Purpose and our Calling that, when understood, can transform how we show up for our families and our work.
Your Purpose is God’s Will manifested in your character – it’s the parent, spouse, and person He is sculpting you to become. This isn’t about your role as a manager, homemaker, or community leader. Rather, it’s about the posture of your heart as you pack school lunches, lead team meetings, or share bedtime prayers with your children. Your Purpose Statement should reflect this inner transformation.
Your Calling, on the other hand, is your God-given Vocation – the unique way He’s equipped you to serve others through your work and family life. This manifests in what I call a Stretch Dream – a vision so bold that it can only be achieved through divine partnership, whether that’s raising children who know they are deeply loved, building a business that transforms your community, or fostering a marriage that inspires others.
Let me share a personal example that might resonate with your journey:
My purpose is to nurture the divine spark in others, helping them recognize and cultivate their God-given gifts – whether I’m encouraging my children to be brave in the face of challenges, supporting my spouse in pursuing their dreams, or mentoring others in our community. This purpose flows from the spiritual gifts of encouragement, discernment, and prophecy that God has graciously bestowed upon me.
My calling is to serve as a family-focused coach and guide. My stretch dream is to become a beacon of wisdom and gentle guidance for professionals seeking deeper purpose and connection – much like Mister Rogers was for children, but for parents and couples navigating life’s beautiful complexities. This calling shapes how I invest my time and energy, always remembering that my first ministry is to my own family.
When we align our purpose (who God is shaping us to be) with our calling (how He’s asking us to serve), we discover a profound sense of peace amidst the beautiful chaos of family life. Our work becomes worship, and our daily responsibilities become opportunities for spiritual growth and meaningful impact.
How is God inviting you to understand your purpose and calling in this season of your life? Remember, these divine invitations often whisper to us in the quiet moments between bedtime stories and morning commutes, in the gentle nudges during family dinner conversations, and in the sacred spaces of prayer and reflection.
May you find clarity and courage as you explore these essential questions within the context of your most precious relationships. It would be my pleasure to help you on that journey.
Humbly,
Coach C
