What came first? The chicken or the egg?
What came first? Happy people because they work for great company, or a great company because the people bring a positive attitude and enthusiasm with them every day to work?
I contend the later.
The wiser I get, the more I realize great places to work start with the right people. Companies that are comprised of people who are waiting for “management” to make it a great place to work, will never be a great place to work. Those companies are dysfunctional and the people are miserable. In their cultures, most popular pronoun is “they”.
- They won’t let us do this or that.
- They don’t communicate well.
- They don’t value us.
Great places to work start with happy people, people who starve the fear wolf and feed the wolf of love and courage. People who shift their focus away from themselves to others.
You see, the starting point for happiness is the moment you shift the focus away from yourself. If all you think about are your needs, wants, problems and feelings, you’re going to be a miserable person. No one will want your company.
If you want to be one of those rare, unselfish people, change your focus. Shift it away from yourself and to other people. You must learn how to do it, as it doesn’t come naturally. Treat it like you’re training for it. Proudly become an “Servant-In-Training“.
By doing this, you’ll notice two character traits emerge on the way to a happier life:
- You’ll cooperate better with others.
- You’ll be more considerate others’ needs, doubts and fears.
Happiness comes from service because that’s how we’re wired. God wired the universe in such a way that the more you give of yourself, the more you’re blessed in return. To have a happy heart, practice service and generosity every day. Serve others with no expectation of anything in return. However, note the ROI of your investment will be beyond your wildest imagination. Why? Because it has to. It’s a natural law.
How do you do this? It’s simple. Wake up every day and prepare your mind to serve and give. Ask yourself, “Who can I thank and serve today?” Bring this attitude with you to work. Bring it to every meeting. Bring it to every conversation. Bring it to every task.
That’s how great places to work are made. Great cultures, great companies, great teams and great families start with people who are willing to serve and give. Live openly and honestly with others to reveal a heart that desires to meet their needs.
