The hardest person to love is often yourself—especially when you’ve been your own harshest critic. We all carry within us both a critical voice and a compassionate one. The key is learning to nurture that compassionate part through spiritual eyes that see clearly every single day.
Seeing with spiritual eyes isn’t a now-and-then practice—it’s a lifestyle that transforms how you view yourself, your purpose, and others. When you walk with the Lord, you can take captive those unholy thoughts of self-criticism, cast out the sin of self-hatred, and live in the righteousness of knowing you are beloved. This spiritual clarity sharpens your awareness of God’s presence and role in your life, including His call to grow and serve.

But nurturing self-compassion through spiritual vision isn’t passive—it grows through faithful action. When you turn your life into a ministry of service, constantly pushing your value up through learning, growing, and making yourself indispensable to others, you’re actually living out the greatest commandments. You’re loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength by stewarding the gifts He’s given you, and you’re proving your love for yourself by demonstrating love for your neighbors.
It’s not just about clocking in and out of life. It’s about becoming the person who solves problems, anticipates needs, and makes things happen through God’s strength. When your boss, clients, and neighbors think “I need this person—they bring something unique to the table,” you’re reflecting God’s image and purpose in you.
You’ve got to outgrow your current understanding of yourself before your capacity for love can expand. Be the person who serves others so genuinely that Mark 12:30-31 becomes lived reality: loving God completely and loving your neighbor as yourself. Every person you encounter becomes your neighbor in that moment, and when you approach these connections through spiritual eyes—seeing them as God sees them—respect and care flow naturally.
The external recognition will follow, but the first step is becoming worth it to yourself by recognizing your worth in God’s eyes and living that truth through service to others. When you see with spiritual eyes daily, self-love, service to others, and love for God become one unified way of life.
