Adversity is an inevitable part of life. While we can’t avoid or control it, we can choose how we respond. Our reactions to challenges can either build our character or diminish our spirit.
Adversity can be a powerful team builder when responded to constructively. Everyone has a role and a job to do. If one person fails to do their part, the entire team is affected. The coach must remind players of this, using mistakes as learning opportunities. No individual is above the team, and no one can succeed alone. Trust and reliance on teammates are crucial. There should be no single hero; instead, everyone should work selflessly to uplift each other.

Life is a team sport, and the common good is achieved by viewing it this way. God can use anyone who believes in Him to make a positive impact on the world. We must constantly ask ourselves, “Am I trying to be the hero, or am I trying to make heroes of others?” Adversity benefits those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
A team should have no divisions if its members care equally for one another. When one member suffers, everyone suffers with them. When one is honored, everyone celebrates. The team grows and strengthens in love as each member fulfills their role. Just as a body has many parts with different functions working together, a team is made up of members with diverse talents and roles. The team forms one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
If you believe in God, you can rely on five provisions He offers for strength and guidance through adversity:
- Presence – He promises to never leave us nor forsake us.
- Pathway – Even if we don’t understand our trials, He is in control and will use them for His purpose. We can trust His guidance to lead us toward good.
- Potential – Hardships are opportunities for learning. God values our character over our comfort and offers us the chance to grow through adversity. Distress and disappointment are tools that shape us.
- Protection – While we may wish to avoid life’s storms, God sees adversity as necessary for our spiritual growth. He provides protection by staying with us through struggles, assuring us that nothing can separate us from His love.
- Peace – Difficulties can trigger anxiety, but God’s peace is available to believers. This peace isn’t dependent on improved circumstances but stems from our relationship with Him. Instead of focusing on fixing the situation, we should lean into His word for serenity.
In conclusion, adversity is an inevitable part of life for both individuals and teams. It has the potential to build strong character, relationships, and cohesion. However, as humans with free will, we have the choice to decide how we respond to it. Adversity can be either a friend or a foe. Choose to make it your friend.
